Founded in 1283, by D. Abadessa Mor Days, the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha was delivered shortly after the Clare nuns. Dona Isabel of Aragon, Queen Santa Isabel, interested by the convent and had built a new church in Gothic style, which was consecrated in 1330.
The place where the convent was built proved to be a bad choice, because of flooding from the River Mondego. The old convent was abandoned in 1677 and the nuns moved to a new building, built in a place higher.
